A Versatile One Room Studio
Upstairs in our home is a vaulted, multi-faceted room we call the studio because it was built for my photography business – but that was during our pre-children days. It wasn't long before my husband and I were fondly calling the space the Peter Pan Nursery because that's where we were tucking in our six little kiddies each night, the two youngest in cribs. When the basement finally got finished and the children were scuttled off downstairs the studio became known as the game room with a ping pong table and theater movie screen. The room has housed Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas parties, and overnight guests. Tables in the room have often been cluttered with school, art, or scrapbook projects. It is a room that will see many more uses before its days are done.
When people meet me they often ask what I do. I think of my studio. Yes, it's true I am a portrait photographer and artist, but thanks to my children I am so much more. I am a mother. And as all mothers know, a lot comes with the job. I learned during those long, lovely afternoons of humming my children to sleep that I was a lyricist and songwriter. Who would have known? And once those kiddies had drifted off and I had two hours of quiet time to organize my thoughts, I found out I was a writer. What a surprise! But more importantly, ever since heaven blessed our home with children of our own I have gained a deeper compassion and charity in my heart. I guess you could say I, too, am a versatile, one-room studio (with many more uses left in me before my days are done).
